J. Cole, like many rappers (i.e. Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar, to name a few), tends to grow out his hair when he’s working on an album.

During the Born Sinner era, J. Cole grew out his afro (kept it in shape though) while working on his album:

He immediately cut it off after the album came out and he began touring (first for his “Dollar and a Dream Tour,” then for his Born Sinner tour, “What Dreams May Come”).

Then, while he was in the process of making his latest album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, he began growing his hair out again. But this time, he didn’t say anything about working on an album, leaving fans to make the assumption that an album was in the making. Another difference between the Born Sinner era and the 2014 Forest Hills Drive era is that this time, J. Cole left his hair grown, and continued to grow it out. (Even while he begins his mega, three-part tour for the promotion of his latest album.)

In an interview on The Combat Jack Show, J. Cole mentioned that his mother always wanted him to grow his hair out. She said that she felt it would mesh well with his artsy personality, but he never listened…until he turned 30. J. Cole also mentioned that he is aware that his hair is a hot mess: “My hair is a mess, bruh. I’m aware, but I love it. And people tell me a lot like: ‘Yo, your shit looking rough, what you doing with that?’ And I get it, but I’m also at that point in my life where I wasn’t at 4 years ago, 3 years ago, where it’s like… I don’t give a FUCK! Like, I’m very confident walking out the crib with my shit looking CRAZY.” Clearly, J. Cole is in love with his mini dreaded-afro. And if J. Cole loves it, so do we!

Here’s a look at his dreaded-afro in his video for “Apparently”  and for his newest video “G.O.M.D.” (both off his album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive):
