You’ve shed all the tears your body could possibly produce. You’ve gone out drinking in hopes to forget about their face (but really just ended up never wanting to smell another rum and coke for the rest of your existence). You’ve packed away anything that could possibly remind you of them. Now what? I mean, Kristina DeBarge sang it best- “Cut my hair ‘cuz it reminded me of you, I know you like the long ‘do,  Had to switch my attitude up.” Nothing screams liberation from a past love like switching up the locks. Even if it’s a simple change, a small difference in your appearance can do wonders in lifting your spirits, distract you from your current sorrows, and make you excited for what lays ahead in your future.

Looking for a drastic, complete change? Take a risk and go short. And I’m talking super short. Don’t be afraid to completely chop it all off; your new short do will entice you to start a new. We sometimes use our hair as a subliminal comfort zone, but by completely getting rid of it you can allow yourself to finally achieve a sense a freedom from an old routine. Don’t define yourself from the past. Shed actual and figurative “dead ends” and move forward.

A nice way to give yourself a big switch up (without going too drastically over the top) is a simple hair color change. Go a little blonder (maybe try a bronde?) or try a darker color to make your features pop. Either way, a new color means a new you, one who’s not afraid to move onto bigger and better things.

Clip ins/Extentions

Almost over a heartbreak but still want to try something new? Put in a few extensions or clip ins to either create length or added volume. Don’t like how it looks on you? Simply take them out. No commitment, no problems, right?

The scariest part of being with someone is facing the unknown: not knowing if in a few weeks their feelings for you will change, not knowing if you’re being naive in already caring about them so much, not knowing whether or not your making the right choices for yourself in the long run, not knowing what the future holds for the both of you. The more time you spend with someone, the more these realities of uncertainty begin to cloud your mind. And all the while you find yourself in a place that fills you with love and excitement, as well as perpetual fear. But from a writer to a reader, from a friend to a friend, please take this advice: Don’t let your fear of the future damage the love you’ve found today. Because one morning you’ll wake up and realize that it pains you to listen to music, as every note reminds you of the sweetness in their soul. You’ll notice that every sunset is a little less sublime without them. You’ll wake up and realize that everything around you carries a small subliminal message about them. And soon you’ll find yourself too weighed down from it all to push forward, and too saddened to see any joy that use to fill your day. Life is filled with things to be scared about… it’s facing it with someone you care about that’s supposed to make it just a bit easier.

If your heart has already been broken, know that the worst is already over. Make sure to cry until you physically cannot any longer. Let everything around you fall apart for a moment, because the best of you will be built from the ashes afterwards. Do whatever you need to do to make yourself feel whole again. Sing. Dance. Write. Read. Fix your hair. Do your makeup. Find who you truly are, without the need of a secondary presence. You are your own person- make sure you love yourself first before loving anyone else again.

So go home and get crazy with your hair. Don’t be scared of change. Become liberated from your mistakes and transform yourself into a better you, no matter what you have to do to get there. And remember, Hair Decoded is always here to get you through any and all of your hair (and emotional) phases.
